The Concord-Carlisle boys’ soccer team had scored 23 goals in six games since it last allowed a goal.
But the No. 1 ranked boys’ team met its match Thursday afternoon on its own pitch as Bedford handed the Patriots a 2-0 loss.
“Concord-Carlisle is a great team, so any time you can get any points from them you have to feel pretty good about it,” Bedford coach Dave Boschetto said. “It’s a happy day for us.”
The Bedford squad spent Wednesday’s practice talking about preparing for the Patriots.
“The way a lot of our guys put it was, they wouldn’t be surprised if we win, but it would shock everyone one else,” Boschetto said.
It certainly stunned the home team.
“It was frustrating; we had chances and unfortunately didn’t capitalize on them,” Concord-Carlisle coach Ray Pavlik said. “You never want to lose.”
A goal in the 23d minute by sophomore center midfielder Peter Whallon put the Buccaneers up early enough to stick to their game plan.
“We know their personnel well and wanted to create the right matchups for our team,” Boschetto said. “It really came down to our center midfielder and our strikers doing extra work to take the load off our defense a little bit.”
Bedford’s second goal came in the 12th minute of the second half off a long throw-in the team kept alive in the Patriots’ box. Senior midfielder David Lee was able to get the ball onto the foot of senior captain Austin O’Connor, who buried it for a 2-0 lead.
“They did a nice job finishing, just tucked it inside the net, certainly give them credit,” Pavilk said. “We’ve only given up three goals all season.’’
